Nepal eats because Madhesh grows.

Madhesh Pradesh is Nepal's densest, flattest and most fertile province — home to 6.1 million people, the gateway city Birgunj, Janaki Mandir, Chhath on pond ghats, Mithila art and three mother tongues. It is also the province with the lowest literacy and HDI, yearly floods and a generation working abroad.

This is an honest guide: what's beautiful, what's broken, and what must change next.

Quick answers

FAQ

Is Madhesh safe to visit?

Yes. Busy and welcoming. Avoid monsoon floods (June–Sep), drink filtered water, respect ghats and temples.

What language works?

Maithili/Bhojpuri open hearts; Nepali and Hindi both work; basic English in Janakpur/Birgunj hotels.

Why do floods repeat?

Himalayan silt + flat slope + weak embankments + cross-border flows + encroached drains. Needs yearly dredging + strong embankments.

What can I support from abroad?

Fund a girl's schooling, a pond clean-up, a library, or a cold-store share — via registered local NGOs or co-ops.
